Coach Profile: Langel played and coached at Penn under Fran Dunphy. When Dunphy moved to Temple, Langel followed as his assistant. In, 2011 Langel got his head coaching chance at Colgate. He’s built quite a program that’s seen success over the last few years. He’s led the Raiders to back-to-back regular season Patriot League titles and they gave Tennessee a scare in the first round of the NCAA Tournament back in 2019 as a 15 seed.
What Makes Them Special?
They defend and take care of the ball. The Raiders lead the country in 3-Point defense! Opponents are only shooting 24.4% from beyond the arc against them this season. They’re also in the top 100 in 2-Point defense, but the main reason for their defensive success is that 3-Point defense.
On the offensive side they simply just don’t turn it over. Only Iowa turns it over less often than Colgate. They combine that with being Top 30 in both Field Goal and 3-Point percentage and they can be deadly. Three of their eight games this year have been wins by 40 or more points! When they get going, they go.
It’s a weird season for everyone, but for Colgate, they have only played eight games so far and are only playing conference games so we won’t get to see them against any of the nation’s top dogs until March if they come out of the Patriot.
There’s no question, senior Jordan Burns is their number one option. Almost a third of their possessions end with Burns. He’s averaging 17.6 pts, 5.6 asts and 4.6 rebs right now and he looks like the frontrunner for player of the year in the Patriot.
The next most important player for the Raiders is Tucker Richardson. He’s only the 4th leading scorer he averages 4.5 rebs, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals. He does a little bit of everything for this team. This is a team I wouldn’t be shocked to see make a little noise in March. The question marks are that they haven’t played any top-level competition this year and if they can rebound with a bigger opponent.
