As it is Christmas Eve, I felt it would be fun to do a post about Christmas movies. I have gathered data from surveys filled out by 32 different people. Respondents were 44% Male and 56% Female. The survey asked respondents to list their top 10 Christmas movies. The movie listed as their number 1 was given 10 points, number 2 was 9 points, number 3 was 8 points and so on. I then developed a ranking with the based upon the number of points movies received. The top 10 movies are listed below.
Movie | Total Points |
Elf | 241 |
How the Grinch Stole Christmas | 177 |
Home Alone | 149 |
Polar Express | 144 |
Christmas Vacation | 118 |
A Christmas Story | 102 |
The Santa Clause | 101 |
It’s a Wonderful Life | 55 |
Home Alone 2 | 51 |
The Santa Clause 2 | 45 |
The entire ranking is listed at the bottom of this post. Elf was by far the most popular followed by the Grinch. This includes both the new and old Grinch movies. I thought this ranking gave a good idea of where the top 10 movies stood, however I was curious which movies were selected as people’s favorite movie most often. To find this, I looked at the percentage that each movie was put in 1st place on the respondents’ surveys. The following chart shows the percentages for the movies that were put 1st.
Movie | 1st% |
Elf | 28% |
How the Grinch Stole Christmas | 16% |
Polar Express | 16% |
It’s a Wonderful Life | 13% |
Home Alone | 6% |
Christmas Vacation | 6% |
A Christmas Story | 3% |
Christmas Carol | 3% |
Die Hard | 3% |
Four Christmases | 3% |
I also was curious which movies were put on the survey most often. The next chart shows the percentage that each movie showed up in surveys.
Movie | Top 10 % |
Elf | 97% |
How the Grinch Stole Christmas | 81% |
Home Alone | 72% |
Polar Express | 69% |
Christmas Vacation | 59% |
The Santa Clause | 59% |
A Christmas Story | 56% |
The Santa Clause 2 | 31% |
It’s a Wonderful Life | 28% |
Christmas with the Kranks | 28% |
Elf is by far the most common. There was only one survey on which Elf did not appear. The chart below is a good visual to represent what I’ve found. The x-axis is the total number of points assigned to each movie from the surveys. The y-axis is the percentage that the movie showed up on the survey.
Elf is easily the most popular Christmas movie and the difference can be seen on the chart above. I also know a lot of those who filled out the survey were in their late teens and early twenties so maybe if there were more of an older age of respondents then older Christmas movies may have been more prevalent. However, I also think it is interesting to see what movies this particular group chose.
Thank you to everyone who participated and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!
